Farni’s Nasi Kukus

[picture]

The best (actually it’s the only) nasi kukus I’ve ever tasted. Individually steamed rice with perfectly fried chicken marinated with spices such as turmeric, added with some sinfully delicious beef rendang and curry fish gravy. Served with cucumber and sambal (very spicy!) on the side. At RM5.50 per pack, Farni’s nasi kukus is available at Bukit Damansara, next to the Masjid Saidina Umar Al-Khattab and directly behind the Pondok Polis.

Grumpy Aunty Char Kway Teow (aka Lorong Selamat Char Kway Teow)

Fried by an old, grumpy aunty who demands to know your table number before ordering (you have been warned!), the char kway teow is cooked over high charcoal fire which infuses in it a slightly burnt but aromatic flavor. Added with big, juicy and succulent prawns, the char kway teow in Lorong Selamat, Penang is definitely one of the best char kway teows I’ve ever tasted in my entire life. Although the price is a little steep at RM6.50 (normal), RM7.00 (big) and RM9.00 (add prawns), it is a must try for anyone seeking gastronomic delights in Penang. You’ll be able to spot the aunty who is equipped with red head gears and goggles at Heng Huat Cafe, 108, Lorong Selamat, 10400 Penang.

Burp factor: (would’ve been 4.5 stars if the aunty was a little friendlier)

Song River Roasted Chicken

The honey coated roast chicken is available at Song River Restaurant along Gurney Drive in Penang. Served hot and crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, it is worth every sen of the RM9.00 I paid for 2 chicken wings and 1 thigh with drumstick. Two words: HO CHIAK!

Lebuh Pantai Beef Noodles

Served in hot, tasty beef broth added with tender slices of beef and various internal parts, the beef noodles opposite the Fire Department (balai bomba) in Lebuh Pantai, Penang is definitely a must try if you’re in Penang. Expect to pay RM8.00 for a big bowl of beef noodles. If you know of anywhere else that I can get awesome beef noodles, please let me know!

P/s: You might want to try the fried oyster omelette at the same shop as well. The omelette tasted pretty good (loved the crunchiness of the batter) and is available at RM8.00 for a plate of medium serving.

Steamed Lala (Restoran Boston Baru)

[picture]

The famous steamed lala in Restoran Boston Baru (located at Jalan Meru, Klang) is served piping hot with loads of ginger strips and fried garlic on top. Steamed to perfection in Chinese cooking wine added with a good amount of cili padi, the dish’s stock is so spicily tasty that you can eat an entire plate of white rice with nothing but the stock (I’m serious!). At RM12.00 per serving, you wouldn’t want to miss Restoran Boston Baru’s steamed lala whenever you’re in Klang!

Ah Ma Laksa (Restoran Tmn Chi Liung, Klang)

[picture]

The legen-wait for it-dary Ah Ma laksa (prepared by an old aunty, who incidentally is a little grumpy as well) in Taman Chi Liung, Klang is served in deliciously rich curry simmered with coconut milk to perfection. The curry’s hotness is just right, not too spicy till it burns your tongue, and not too mild till it lacks any punch. The laksa which is served with a generous amount of steamed chicken, char siew, cockles (see ham) and bean sprouts (tauge) is available at RMx.x0 (small) and RMx.xo (big). If you are in Klang and happen to have some spare time to kill (average waiting time is 30 minutes!), do head over to Restoran Tmn Chi Liung located directly opposite the Public Bank to try out the delicious Ah Ma laksa.

[Name of mamak] @ ESSO mamak’s Indomee

[picture]

Think all indomees taste the same? Think again! [name of mamak] or better known as ESSO mamak in Teluk Pulai serves the best tasting indomee I’ve ever had. It is so good that I am almost convinced that the mamak operators must be adding some secret ingredients while preparing it. Have a try and you’ll understand my sentiments.
